James SULLIVAN and Catherine McGARRITY
Ireland to Cumberland Township

While researching my family tree (Sullivan), I came across a number of emails which
started Dec/2002. In the emails, you mention that you had a picture of a Catherine
Sullivan who was born in 1851. I have a sister of my great grandfather (Richard Sullivan
b. 1836 d.. 1900) who was named Catherine born around 1851. I am wondering if this
is the same Catherine. Richard and Catherine's parents were James and Catherine Sullivan
who came to Canada in the late 1820's (not sure of the correct date of arrival) and
settled in Cumberland Twp near the town of Bearbrook, Ontario. James and Catherine had
5 children I can account for - James (b.1831), Richard, John Henry (b.1847 d. 1892),
Samuel (b. 1849) and Catherine.
Could you let me know if this is a possibility as this would fit in my family tree
nicely as I do not have any info on where Catherine went after the 1871 census -
she was 19 years old at the time of the census.

Thanks for your trouble and I hope this is a fit for my family tree.

Hi Wayne:
Thanks for your e-mail.
I was hoping to hear from some descendants of my Sullivan ancestors but it doesn't
look as if we have a match.
My GGrandmother, Catherine Sullivan (born in 1851) was the daughter of Nicholas
Sullivan from County Meath and Mary McGee who came from County Armagh.
There were quite a few Sullivans who came to the Ottawa area starting about 1823 and I
have been trying to sort them out.
Most of them were Catholic from the southern part of Ireland but there were also
some Protestant Sullivan families.
Since your ancestors were in Cumberland, which is now a part of the City of Ottawa, do
you mind if I start a new page on our web site for your ancestors? There may be
persons who follow the web site and who are descended from your Sullivan ancestors.
Just let me know if this is OK with you.
I have the 1881 census here and could check for Sullivans in the Ottawa area
and see what shows up.

Thanks for the reply. My Sullivan ancestors were Protestant, not Catholic - that I
have found out. James Sullivan (my great-great grandfather) came to Canada sometime
in the 1820's (I think). I can't seem to find a record of what ship he came to Canada
on, though. I know he was born in Ireland in 1805. He married a Catherine McGarrity
(maybe McGarety) but I don't know if they came to Canada married or met and were
married in Canada. I have included what I think is their census records for 1861 and
1871. Definitely the 1871 is correct, but the 1861 indicates they were in Algona twp
in the Renfrew area, which isn't correct. This could be another James Sullivan, but
what a co-incidence to be married to a Catherine McGarrity and have the same three
children's names as in the 1871 census.
I would apppreciate it if you could check for the 1881 census record for James Sullivan
and also his sons James and Richard. I have a record of Henry - son of James, moving
to Calvin twp (near North Bay) sometime around 1880 and another son, RIchard showing
up in Calvin twp in the 1891 census - no record of him in the 1881 census that I can find.
I can't find the son, James in 1881 either. I have included the census records for James
for 1861 and 1871 that I have.
Go ahead and start a new page for my ancestors. If I have any more info on my ancestors
in the area, I will let you know.

By the way, my wife and I were married in the United Church at Cumberland
during the last century. This could be the same church which your ancestors attended.
There is also an Anglican Church at Bearbrook, south of Cumberland. Come to think of it,
I believe that there are Sullivans buried there.
